Marshall County Board of Education hears report on 2023 Audit Presentation

By MARY BAILEY The Reporter

The Marshall County School Board met last week and went over the 2023 Audit Presentation.

Cade Burk, Examiner of Public Accounts, went over the details to the board.

“I just want to say that this audit went really well. I appreciate how fast they got in and out,” Burk said.

“In accordance with Act #2006-196 Acts of Alabama Code of Alabama 1975 Section 16-13 A-73E, commonly referred to as the school fiscal accountability act, I am here on the behalf of the State of Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts to present our audit report on the Marshall County Board of Education, covering the period Oct 1, 2022 through Sept. 30, 2023. We conducted our audit in accordance with generally acceptance auditing standards and government auditing standards with the purpose of rendering an opinion on the financial statements and to determine if the board complied with laws and regulations. We also conducted an audit of the board’s federal financial assistance programs in accordance with those same standards and the requirements of Title II US Code of Federal Regulations Part 200 uniformed administrative requirements cost principles and audit requirements for federal awards, which is also known as Uniform Guidance. We issued an unmodified opinion on the board’s financial statements as of and for the fiscal year ending Sept 30, 2023. This means that the financial statements are presented fairly and in accordance with generally accepted and accounting principles. We did not report any finding in our report. Thank everyone for your assistance during the audit process to make this as smooth as it could be.”

The full audit report can be found at www.examiners.alabama.gov under the Audit Reports tab.

“We all want to say thank you and amen,” said Marshall County Board of Education President, Brian Naugher. “We appreciate all the great work that has gone into where we are because we all know where we came from. Great leadership, Bob.”

Bob Hagood, CSFO then presented the financials for February.

“The February fund balance is the last one that I’ve completed so I will go over that,” Hagood said. “We have $11, 960,153.60 equates to 2.3/4 months of operating reserve. Compared to last year, if you look at expenditures, expenditures are up, but revenues are up as well. Last year at this time our fund balance was 2.30 so we are still easing up. I’ve told the board that we’ve also spent some of that fund balance on capital stuff, but we were able to do that and still come back from that and keep this fund balance growing. So, we are in a pretty good place with that.”

Marshall County Schools Superintendent, Cindy Wigley, went over important dates for the month:

April is School Library Month

National Occupational Therapy Month

April 1-5, 2024-National Assistant Principal Week

April 3, 2024-Paraprofessional Appreciation Day

April 4, 2024-School Librarian Appreciation Day

April 23, 2024-School Bus Drivers Appreciation Day

April 24, 2024-Administrative Assistant Appreciation Day

“Again, we thank all these folks for all they do each day for our students and our schools; to help other staff members. We appreciate each and every one,” Wigley said.

“DAR Elementary was recognized at the Alabama State Department of Education’s meeting today. The Purple Star Schools Program is a collaborative initiative developed to recognize the efforts of K-12 schools in the state that are committed to and supportive of military students, and their families, as they transition to their new homes and schools. It is very good for one of our schools to receive this recognition we always want to be military friendly and support our men and women and family in the military.”

DAR will also be the host of the Marshall County Special Olympics on Thursday, April 25.

“They have been working very hard to get a lot of different activities together for our students. It’s going to be held at the DAR Campus and we have beautiful medals that have been made. We are the host this year, it’s not just the county schools but the city schools as well. We are hoping to have good weather that day but if not, we have a rain day set,” Wigley continued.

“I just really appreciate all the clubs that are coming together to make the event a very special day, we are excited about it.”
