Local Main Street Programs Recognized

OPELIKA, Ala.-- Main Street Alabama celebrated local program successes at the ninth annual Awards of Excellence program on August 18, at the Auburn Marriott Opelika Resort Hotel & Spa at Grand National in Opelika. 

During the Awards of Excellence Program, Main Street Alabama recognized projects, and individuals that made impacts in their communities.

The Awards of Excellence awarded winners in the categories of Preservation, Historic Rehabilitation, Fundraising, Public Relations, Public/Private Partnerships, Business Development, Economic Impact, Adaptive Reuse, Promotion, Business Promotions, Marketing, Placemaking, Non-Historic Building Design, and Panning and Public Space.  Local Main Street programs also selected a Main Street Hero that honored an individual, business, or organization that made an outstanding contribution to their program. 

This year, Fort Payne- Main Street program won two awards for its efforts to revitalize Downtown Fort Payne. 

The Fort Payne- Main Street received awards in the following categories: 

Main Street Alabama Community Hero-  Randy Posey 

Main Street Alabama Award of Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation-  Jerry Clifton for his rehabilitation of The Lofts on Gault.  

This year,  Main Street Scottsboro won three awards for its efforts to revitalize Downtown Scottsboro; the Scottsboro City Council also won the Main Street Hero Award for its support of the Main Street Scottsboro program.

The Main Street Scottsboro Board received awards in the following categories:

Excellence in Promotion- Scottsboro Trade Days

Excellence in Planning & Public Space- Downtown Square Lighting Project

Excellence in Preservation- Downtown Historic Photo Trail

Hero Award- Scottsboro City Council

Main Street Alabama focuses on bringing jobs, dollars, and people back to Alabama’s historic communities.  Economic development is at the heart of their efforts to revitalize downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.
