GERALDINE, Ala. — High Falls Park in Geraldine will be hosting its annual Appreciation Day on Saturday, September 24.
According to Wayne Wilson, one of the event’s main organizers, the park has played host to this event for the past several years, which started out as a small cookout for members of the DeKalb County Parks Commission, thanking them for supporting the park.
However, “Last year, we opened it up to the public, as a way to make the public more aware of the park and show our appreciation for their support as well,” Wilson said.
In addition to thanking the public for supporting High Falls Park, Wilson explained that this year’s Appreciation Day will celebrate the opening of a new welcome center and community building at the park.
Part of the facility will house the park offices, but “The other side will be available for people to rent out for birthday parties, family reunions, and similar events,” Wilson stated.
As well as showing their thanks for the public’s support, Appreciation Day is also a way for the people of DeKalb County to explore this hidden gem of a park. According to Wilson, the park was officially founded in the early 1990s, though it had long been a popular swimming hole, and the site of an important bridge since the early 20th Century.
The park boasts one of the largest waterfalls in North Alabama, as well as plenty of walking trails. “It’s a great place for a family outing,” Wilson said, before adding, “You just have to see it to understand it.”
At this year’s Appreciation Day on the 24th, the gates open at 10 AM, and the entertainment will begin at 10:30. The entertainment lineup includes bluegrass and gospel singers, along with several other musical groups. There will be childrens’ inflatables, and hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be available. Parking and admission to the event are free.
