PREP FOOTBALL: Facts and figures to consider for the 2025 season

The 2025 high school football season is less than a week away.
With the season on the horizon, here are some numbers and storylines associated with the new season for Jackson County high school football teams Woodville, Section, Scottsboro, Pisgah, North Sand Mountain and North Jackson:

Number of head-coaching changes during the offseason. Pisgah Alum Adam Gilbert was promoted to head coach at PHS following the Luke Pruitt’s departure to become the head coach at Boaz. Gilbert, a former head coach at North Sand Mountain and Arab, was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator the previous five seasons.

Number of wins needed for the Pisgah football program to reach 400 all-time victories through 75 seasons, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society’s web site (ahsfhs.org).

Number of defending region champions entering the 2025 season. Scottsboro, North Jackson and Pisgah won region titles last season, marking the most combined region champions in a season for the Jackson County teams since the AHSAA went to the region format in 2000.

Number of coaches with head-coaching experience on the Pisgah coaching staff. The Eagles’ staff includes current head coach Adam Gilbert (NSM 2010-13, Arab 2014-17) and assistants Joey Kirby (Section 2011-14), Doug Haynes (Pisgah 2015) and Freddie Tidmore (Pisgah 1987-94, Scottsboro 2005-09).

Joe Hollis Jr., entering his fifth season as the head football coach at North Jackson, is now the longest-tenured head football coach in Jackson County following Luke Pruitt’s departure from Pisgah for Boaz. Joel Poole and Riley Edwards are entering their third seasons as the head coach at Woodville and Section respectively while Tyler Vann and Jay Lipscomb are entering their second seasons as the head coach at Scottsboro and NSM respectively.

Consecutive playoff appearances for NSM, the longest current playoff appearance streak among Jackson County teams. The Bison have qualified for the AHSAA state playoffs in 13 of the last 14 seasons.

The 2025 football season will be the 20th for the Woodville High School football program, which played its first season in 2006.

Number of combined wins for Jackson County teams last season, the most since they combined for 37 victories during a 2002 season in which North Jackson (14-1) played in the Class 4A state championship game, Pisgah (12-2) advanced to the Class 2A state semifinals and Section turned in a seven-win campaign.

Number of career wins for Woodville head coach Joel Poole, including nine in two seasons at Woodville, where he is now the program’s second all-time winningest head coach

Number of pass completions last season by Section quarterback Aaron Thomas, making the senior the leading returner in pass completions. Thomas, who was 102-for-186 passing for 981 yards, also tied with North Jackson sophomore quarterback Creed Richardson in most touchdown passes (10) last season.

Number of all-time wins for the North Jackson football program over 37 seasons, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society’s web site (ahsfhs.org), following the consolidation of Bridgeport and Stevenson High Schools for the 1988-89 school year. The Chiefs are 10 wins away from reaching the 300-wins mark. Stevenson totaled 380 wins in 66 seasons and Bridgeport had 220 wins in 75 seasons, per the AHSFHS, prior to the schools merging to form North Jackson.

Number of all-time wins for the Scottsboro football program over 112 seasons, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society’s web site (ahsfhs.org). The Wildcats need seven wins to reach the 550-win mark and currently have the 74th most wins, per the AHSFHS’ list of winningest Alabama high school football programs.

Number of receiving yards last season for Pisgah wide receiver Landon Watkins, making the senior the county’s returning leader in receptions (37), receiving yards and receiving touchdowns (eight).

Number of passing yards last season for North Jackson quarterback Creed Richardson, making the sophomore the county’s leading returning passer who tied Section’s Aaron Thomas in passing touchdowns (10).
