Apple Annie Day returns as Scottsboro Woman's League sells fresh apples to benefit scholarships and local nonprofits

Story By Katie Hightower

On Sept. 26, the Scottsboro Woman’s League will hold its annual Apple Annie Day fundraiser. Scottsboro Woman’s League members will be at three locations to accept donations in exchange for apples: Cadence Bank, the Jackson County Courthouse and Bruce’s Foodland in Scottsboro.

The Apple Annies will be at the locations between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. dressed in their signature red tights and vintage striped aprons. They will also carry baskets filled with freshly picked apples from Scott’s orchard in Hazel Green. This year the club will have two flavors of apples to choose from: Golden Delicious and Fuji. The club also has a Venmo account as a payment option.

“The Scottsboro Woman’s League was founded in 1968 to promote common interests in arts, education, good government, intentional affairs, moral and spiritual values and philanthropy,” said club parliamentarian, Cheyenne Bennett. “Our annual projects include the Apple Annie presale, Apple Annie Day and Mistletoe Market. Through donations, the Scottsboro Woman’s League is able to provide scholarships to high school graduates each year and contribute funds towards many local nonprofit organizations as well.”

Membership to the Scottsboro Woman’s League is limited to 30 appointed members and each member serves a ten year active service term before they transition to sustainer. This year, new members appointed to the club included Kaitlin Bonner, Elizabeth Clark, Ciara Word, Elizabeth Blizzard, Sara Grace Carson and Carleigh Glover.

Each year, six officers get picked to lead the Scottsboro Woman’s League. Officers for the 2025-2026 term included Beth Weldon, president; Savannah Boykin, vice president; Colby Bradford, secretary; Holly Patterson, treasurer; Audrey Bergman, historian; Cheyenne Bennett, parliamentarian and Lindsey Dill, chaplain.

Other members of the Scottsboro Woman’s League included Melissa Hamilton, Beth Watson, Suzanne Chapman, Trish Kennedy, Marcae Arnold, Molly Sellers, Morgan Bone, Nikki Holt, Stephanie Gilbert, Kelly Blevins, Lindsey White, Callie Guillory, Ashley Campbell, Laura Teal, Rose Keller, Tasha Mitchell and Kadi Noble.

“I am currently serving in my tenth year with the club and I get a little emotional thinking of all that we’ve accomplished,” Bennett said. “All of our members have families and careers yet still commit themselves to serving the people of this community. There’s truly no greater blessing than serving others in a volunteer role while getting to minister to each other along the way.”
