City Council approves Two Sisters Square agreement, names Godfrey new police chief

Story by Hunter Jones

On Monday, the Scottsboro City Council held a council meeting at Scottsboro City Hall. There were five items on the agenda, all five of which were approved.

First, before moving into new business, the city recognized Police Chief Ron Latimer, who will be retiring effective April 1. Latimer has served in the Scottsboro Police Department for 32 years, working his way up from officer in October 1992 to being named Police Chief following Ralph Dawe’s retirement on June 1, 2020.

The city council then moved onto new business, starting with an agreement for Two Sisters Square alongside a 10 foot utility easement for the adjoining building.

Next, the city council approved a resolution and agreement for the ATRIP-II Grant Project for Access Management on US-72 and Micah Way. The project itself would not need approval and funds for it will need to be put into next year’s budget.

Next, the city council approved a mowing contract bid with a $9,000 budget amendment to cover the remainder of the year. The funds from the budget amendment will be paid out of excess sales tax.

Next, the city council approved a $5,500 budget amendment for the Street Department to pay for the price increase on tractor leases. The funds will be paid out of excess sales tax.

Lastly, the city council heard recommendations for Police Chief. Mayor Jim McCamy recommended Major Greg Godfrey for the position effective April 1. The city council followed suit, nominating and approving Godfrey as the new Police Chief.

The city council will meet again next week for a work session on Monday at Scottsboro City Hall at 5 p.m.
