SPECIAL TO THE REPORTER
Peggy Bishop met with Stephen Worthy, head golf professional at Gunter’s Landing, and Christie Bruce in April of 2024 about ideas to fund a scholarship in honor of her late son, Matthew Bishop.
Matthew played golf at Albertville High School, where he made the golf team as a freshman and went on to compete in the AHSAA State Tournament his senior year. Matthew passed away after having pancreatic surgery in the spring of 2022. Mrs. Bishop started the Matthew Bishop Scholarship Fund later that same year.
Worthy and Bruce encouraged Mrs. Bishop to reach out to John Doyle, Guntersville Elementary School principal and Guntersville High School golf coach, for ideas about a tournament that would fund the scholarship.
On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Peggy Bishop contacted Doyle about a scholarship opportunity for Marshall County golfers. Mrs. Bishop said that she wanted to support golf in Marshall County in honor of her son.
Her original idea was to present the low medalist of the county tournament with a scholarship. After several conversations and a few days of thought, Doyle and Mrs. Bishop discussed the idea of sponsoring the Marshall County Golf Tournament for all the boys and girls teams from all eight high schools in the county.
The plan is for the money raised in hole sponsorships to cover the entry fee for every girls and boys team in the county and then use the remaining funds that are raised to fund two scholarships for the girls and boys low medalists. This idea will benefit every golf program in Marshall County.
Mrs. Bishop is currently in the process of making contacts to acquire more hole sponsors and will continue to reach out to businesses and individuals between now and the tournament date, which is Tuesday, April 15, at Lake Guntersville State Park’s Eagle’s Nest Golf Course.
Anyone interested in sponsoring a hole should contact Mrs. Bishop no later than Saturday, April 5, to ensure they have a sponsorship sign on the course during the tournament. Hole sponsorships are $100 each but you can donate any amount above and beyond that by contacting Mrs. Bishop at 256-506-2288.
Mrs. Bishop and all of the local golf teams would like to thank you in advance for considering this wonderful opportunity to support golf in Marshall County in honor of Matthew.
