SUMITON, Aa. — The Valley Head Tigers defeated the Sumiton Christian Eagles, 41-0 on Friday night, and claimed the Class 1A, Region 7 Championship.
The Valley Head Tigers scored in the first quarter on a 50-yard stampede into the endzone by Jordan Burt. The point-after attempt failed but gave the Tigers the 6-0 advantage over the Eagles.
On the first play of the second quarter, Burt took it in for his second touchdown of the night. Bryson Morgan brought in the two-point conversion, to make the score 14-0. After a long drive by Sumiton, the Valley Head defense held them for four plays inside the red zone, forcing a turnover on downs. With 1:26 remaining in the first half, Sumiton intercepted the Valley Head pass and scored off a 35-yard pass play. The Eagles unsuccessfully went for two, making the score 14-6. With only :20 remaining in the second quarter, Burt cashed in his third touchdown of the night. The point-after attempt was good, giving the Tigers the 21-6 advantage at the half.
The Valley Head defense stood strong and held the Eagles to start the third quarter. Burt galloped down the field for 40 yards to score his fourth touchdown of the night, giving the Tigers the 28-6 advantage. With 4:05 in the third quarter, Burt connected to Pacey Cooper on a 56-yard touchdown pass to take the 34-6 lead.
Burt bulldozed his way down the field from 60 yards out, to add his fifth touchdown of the night, with 3:57 remaining in the game, making the final score of the night, 41-6.
Jordan Burt led the Valley Head Tigers with 291 yards on 21 carries and 5 touchdowns.
The Valley Head Tigers will host the Collinsville Panthers on Friday night. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Thursday.
