Senator McGill defeated longtime incumbent Lowell Barron (D) in 2010 and has been lauded by many as having the most conservative voting record in Montgomery during his tenure.

What was a crowded field just a month ago may now be down to a two man race for the Republican nomination of Senate District 8 after John Blackwell exited the field to contemplate a run for US Congress (story broken by Southern Torch) and Senator McGill now potentially bowing out.

District 24 House Rep Todd Greeson (R-Ider) and businessman Steve Livingston (R-Scottsboro) could now go head-to-head for the nomination. Greeson has held the HD24 (DeKalb) seat in Montgomery for almost 16 years, but Livingston is now expected to receive heavy support from the Madison and Jackson County portions of District 8.

Southern Torch believes that Senator McGill may publicly announce his decision as early as next week.
