Hubbard Receives Resounding Votes for 2nd Term as Speaker

The Republicans in the Alabama House of Representatives met on Thursday to elect their leaders for the next four years.

The caucus retained Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn) as Speaker of the House, Micky Hammon (R-Decatur) as House Majority Leader, and Victor Gaston (R-Mobile) as Speaker Pro Tem.

Proud to be sworn in today by Lt. Governor Kay Ivey in the very chamber where we’ve made so much progress over the past four years. I look forward to four more years of bold, conservative reforms and to serving the people of Auburn to the best of my abilities.

- Alabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard

There was chatter of Jim Carns (R-Birmingham) mounting a charge to unseat Hubbard after the Speaker was indicted on 23 counts of corruption, a week before the election coincidentally. However, any efforts made didn't carry much weight.

Hubbard won the vote 59-8, with two members of the caucus abstaining.

The roles won't be made official until the entire Alabama House of Representatives during organizational sessions in January.
