Board of Education to Address Common Core

The Common Core debate rages on across Alabama and around the country. Thursday the Alabama State Board of education will consider revoking the Memorandum of Agreement with the National Governor's Association regarding the Common Core State Standards. This policy does not revoke our Alabama College and Career Ready Standards.

The standards in English and Math will remain the courses of study. But this will formally replace the MOA with a totally internal Alabama policy. The MOA is seen as a stumbling block to consensus, and it is often cited as a document that ties us to a perceived slippery slope of Federal Government involvement in State Education.

"I think it's important that we address these concerns while remaining committed to high bar standards that are ours."

- Mary Scott Hunter

The link to the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards is provided below. Most criticism received seems to not be about the standards themselves, but about the ties to agencies and organizations outside of the State of Alabama.

"Within our party, both sides are very dug in with one side wanting higher standards that are consistent from state to state.  Others are very worried about the involvement of the Federal Government.  I'd like to see us bridge those interests."

- Mary Scott Hunter

Mary Scott Hunter is in her first term on the state school board, representing DeKalb, Etowah, Jackson, Limestone and Madison counties.
