Following the State of the Union address from President Obama, Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead made the below comments:
“Tonight’s State of the Union was no different from Obama’s past SOTU addresses. We heard the same recycled rhetoric he has spewed at the American public throughout his reign in Washington. With a seemingly straight face, Obama claimed, ‘Over the past five years, our businesses have created more than 11 million new jobs’ and that ‘we’ve seen the fastest economic growth in over a decade, our deficits cut by two-thirds, a stock market that has doubled and health care inflation at its lowest rate in fifty years.’ These statements simply could not be further from the truth.
“For the seventh time already this year, President Obama threatened vetoes. Instead of listening to the pleading Americans who elected a Republican majority by a landslide in November, he is stubbornly sticking his fingers in his ears and pretending not to hear their cries. President Obama calls for bipartisanship, yet neglects to follow his own words.
“If President Obama truly wants to ‘give working families a fair shot’, then he should focus on drastically cutting his out-of-control spending. President Obama loves to offer ‘free stuff’ to Americans, but the reality is that nothing is free. Obama’s free health care, free college tuition and stimulus plans have already added over a trillion dollars to our nation’s deficit. Free is not free if someone else is paying for it!
“Regardless of Obama’s hollow speech tonight, I am confident our Republican led Congress – including our strong, conservative Alabama delegation – will continue to fight to protect Americans. As we heard in the Republican response tonight from Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa, Republicans in Washington are listening to the people and will stand strong against Obama’s veto threats. May God bless America and lead our nation to the path of prosperity and freedom.”
