Board of Education Discusses Evaluations

The DeKalb County Board of Education met Tuesday night at Cracker Barrel in Fort Payne to discuss the upcoming Superintendent evaluations.

The evaluations have been met with skepticism by some, including members of the board.

"If I have a problem with somebody I'd rather look them in the eye and say 'I don't like how you're doing this.' Sitting down one-on-one might be a better dialogue than something written on paper."

- Harold Bobo

"I just don't believe the same shoe fits everyone. Some of these things I don't feel like I can answer because I don't follow Mr. Taylor around."

- Terry Wooten

Matt Sharp, who has been the driving force behind the newly implicated evaluations, stands behind the process as an important addition to the board's routine.

"What it should be is a kind of feedback. In an elected superintendent situation it's hard for the board to have any input. In the past some superintendents have haven't worked well with the board. The thought process going into this term was that we would establish these evaluations so that the board could have some leverage over the superintendent. It's important that the superintendent is held accountable. I'm very passionate about it. I don't want it to feel like the wheels are turning without going anywhere."

- Matt Sharp

Sharp handed out evaluations for board members as well as the one for the superintendent.

It was determined that the board members would separately examine the evaluations and determine which questions were appropriate. A majority vote of 3/5 would eliminate something from the evaluation.

The board will reconvene Thursday night for an official meeting and discuss the results of the evaluation.
