FORT PAYNE, Ala. — In a short meeting earlier today (Tuesday, February 28), the DeKalb County Commission received a report from the road department, approved personnel changes, approved training and conferences for employees, and also renewed the liability insurance.

Tom Broyles of the Road Department reported patch units were out each day and crews were hand-patching potholes. Crews were currently hauling chert in District II. While the department had other road projects going on, the recent heavy rains had caused many to be temporarily suspended. Broyles also reported the county had received the complete order of new mowing equipment (tractors and bush hogs).

"We'll have those ready to go when mowing season comes around. It'll be here before you know it," said Broyles.

Broyles also reported two road department workers had resigned. To fill one of the vacancies, the department transferred a crewman from District II to the District III crew. He then recommend the hire of Allen Bunch to fill the resulting District II vacancy and Evan Johnson to fill the vacancy in District IV. The transfers will be effective the following Monday.

Ben Luther, County Engineer, requested permission for himself and another employee to attend the County Engineers Conference in Orange Beach on May 9 and 10. The request was approved.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office promoted Katelyn East from a part time communications officer to full time  to replace Sebastian Gomez, who had submitted his resignation, which will be effective March 10.

The county also approved the renewal of their liability insurance. The Association of County Commissioners of Alabama (ACCA) sought renewal from DeKalb County for the next three years, and by doing so before March 15, the county earned a longevity bonus. The renewal was approved. This concluded the brief meeting.

"Gentleman I drug this out as long as I could. We had a very short agenda today," said Harcrow.

The next meeting of the DeKalb County Commission will be held on March 14 at 10 am in the DeKalb County Activities building.
