WASHINGTON, D.C. — After months of deliberation, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States. Doug Jones, one of just two Democrats that represent Alabama at the national level, voted no on his confirmation.

In late September, Jones said, “The Kavanaugh nomination process has been flawed from the beginning and incomplete at the end. Dr. Ford was credible and courageous and I am concerned about the message our vote will be sending to our sons and daughters, as well as victims of sexual assault. I will be voting no.”

Jones explained on the Senate floor what motivated him to vote against now-Justice Kavanaugh.

“I want to make my position clear today. I think this kind of political campaign for a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States, a political campaign run by either political party, should be condemned as completely contrary to the independence of the judicial branch of our government,” said Jones. He went on to say that the decision to vote no was not an easy choice to make.

Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate on Saturday 50-48 with West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin bucking party lines to vote in favor of confirmation. Justice Kavanaugh took his place on the bench on Tuesday.
