FORT PAYNE, Ala. — The Fort Payne Main Street Farmer's Market is now open on Wednesdays, in addition to their regular Saturday morning hours. We asked Fort Payne Main Street Director Tim Harris what prompted the market to open for a second day of the week, and his reasoning was, "the grower's wanted to be open a second day, our farmer's are producing a lot and needed another day."
He also explained that the Wednesday and Saturday hours wouldn't conflict with the DeKalb County Farmer's Market at the VFW Fairgrounds, which is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 3 pm to 6 pm. The Main Street Market is located in the parking lot across from the DeKalb Theatre, next to Southern Properties. The Wednesday Market will begin at 5 pm, and the Saturday times are 8:30 am till 1 pm, lasting until October 28th.
Shoppers at the market can use the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) vouchers, available from the State of Alabama's Farmers Market Authority. Citizens must apply through the website, and if they qualify, can receive vouchers to purchase produce at the market. Applicants must be 60 years or older at the time of application, and must meet income and household number criteria. The application for this benefit can be found here. Participating farmers redeem the vouchers for cash.
