Fyffe Boys Head to State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — The Fyffe Red Devils (25-6) defeated the Plainview Bears (29-6), 66-62 in overtime to win the Class 3A Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Northeast Regional Finals at Jacksonville State University. 

This win gives the Fyffe Red Devils their first state finals appearance in 35 years. Fyffe has only had six appearances in school history, with the last being in 1985. 

Fyffe took the early 13-4 lead in the first quarter and had the nine-point lead going into the second quarter. Plainview started the second quarter with a 6-0 run and finished the first half with an 8-0 run to go into the half with the 28-27 advantage.  

The Bears started the second half with a 4-0 run but Parker Goodwin cut the lead to 41-39 with a three-pointer at the buzzer, ending the third quarter.  The Red Devils opened up the fourth with a 14-2 run to take the 10-point lead.  After a 3-pointer by Jonah Williams, the Bears went on an 8-0 run.  At the end of regulation play, the teams were tied 55-all.

Fyffe quickly scored in overtime taking the 63-57 lead with 1:22 remaining before Cole Millican hit a three-pointer to cut the Red Devil lead to 3.  Plainview went on a 14-2 to take the 10-point lead. Fyffe cashed in on a few free-throws to narrow the lead to two points with :29 remaining on the time clock.  After missed three-point shots by Plainview and the foul of Tate Goolesby with only :04 remaining, the odds were in the Red Devils’ favor.  Goolesby hit both shots for the win.

Fyffe shot for 46% overall and 50% from the 3-point range.  Xavier Works led the Red Devils with 17 points.  He also had six rebounds, two assists, and a steal.  Micah Johnson had 16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks.  Parker Goodwin had 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.  Brody Dalton finished the night with seven points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks. 

For Plainview, Cole Millican had 32 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and one steal.  

The Fyffe Red Devils will face the winner of the Cottage Hill Christian vs Southside-Selma in the State Semifinal on Monday, March 1 at Bill Harris Arena beginning at 4:30 p.m.
