GERALDINE, Ala. — At this last week’s meeting, the Geraldine City Council voted to use the Municipal Interception Service (MIS) to collect court fees, utility fees, or library fees owed to the Town.

MIS is a free service sponsored by the League of Municipalities.  It was legislatively sanctioned in 2014 and allows recovery of delinquent debts owed by individuals to a municipality through the Alabama Department of Revenue.

“If we have a fee of any kind due to the Town, this MIS will intercept it from State income refunds due to the person, if it is past 60 days delinquent and we have made an attempt to collect it,” stated Geraldine Mayor Chuck Ables.

The Council also passed Resolution 2021-02 which changed the location of the council meetings from the Geraldine Town Hall to Geraldine First Baptist Church, allowing for adequate social distancing due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Ables delivered an update on the progress on several items, including the new t-ball field.  The surveyor is expected to finish laying out the property this week.

Ables also stated that he was researching the best place to purchase rock for the “Welcome to Geraldine” signs.

In other business, the Council approved:

  • Payment of the yearly insurance premium in the amount of  $28,478
  • Approved the use of Geraldine Clinic for employee drug testing.
  • Donated $200 to the DeKalb County Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program
  • The payment of bills in the amount of $26,277.80

The next meeting of Geraldine Town Council will be held on Monday, March 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Geraldine First Baptist Church.
