Fort Payne Welcomes Ordinance Officer

FORT PAYNE, Ala.-- (Full video on Southern Torch Facebook) The Fort Payne City Council held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, June 21. 

Mayor Brian Baine and the Fort Payne City Council welcomed their new Fort Payne Ordinance Enforcement Officer, David Smith to the job.  

David Smith comes to Fort Payne City with a wealth of knowledge, previously serving as a Police Officer with Fort Payne City and as the Chief Jailer for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.  

Smith’s job will be to make sure Fort Payne citizens are aware of current ordinances and issue warnings and citations when needed. 

Mayor Baine also recognized Randy Garrison, and Chaundra Greathouse, with retirement plaques for their 20 years of service to the City of Fort Payne.

Paving, within the city, is tentatively scheduled to begin on July 5, if materials can be obtained. 

The Council suspended the rules for immediate consideration, to approve the following Ordinances: 

  • 2022-03, Rezoning a ½ acre located at the corner of Highway 11 South and Lebanon Road from C-3 (Highway Business District) to M-1 (Light Industrial District) and owned by Randy Wilson to be used for Mini Warehouses
  • 2022-04, Rezoning multiple lots owned by numerous people located on the southern side of 4th Street between Sanders Avenue and Turner Avenue from C-4 (General Business District) to suit development better

The Council also passed Resolution 2022-26, which granted tax abatements to the Fort Payne Improvement Authority (FPIA) for constructing a new sub-station at the south end of Fort Payne. 

The Planning Commission approved the subdividing of approximately 2 acres located at 1320 Isbell Drive into six (6) lots owned by Ronnie and Bonnie Barnett.  The Council approved the new subdivision.

The following activity permits were granted:

  • Catching His Fire Ministries, Michael Helms, Church Revival at the Rotary Pavilion, Friday, August 5, and Saturday, August 6, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
  • Temple Emmanuel, Street Evangelism, Rotary Pavilion, Saturday, August 20, from 12-4 p.m.

The next meeting of the Fort Payne Council will be held on July 5, beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the second floor of the City Hall.
