FORT PAYNE, Ala.- At the Fort Payne City Council work session on Wednesday, Mayor Brian Baine announced that the Fort Payne Police Department would be relocated, immediately, due to safety issues in the building.

After an inspection of a leaky roof, it was discovered that mold was growing in a sealed space inside the building.

The Council and Mayor, along with Fort Payne Police Chief David Davis, felt that the structure, which was built in 1941, was unsafe.  The Fort Payne Police Department will be relocated to the vacant Williams Avenue School Building.

The remodel project of the Fort Payne Police Department is currently in the Fort Payne City budget.  The discovery of mold increased the priority of the project. According to Chief Davis, the City reached out to the Fort Payne School System and requested the use of the vacated Williams Avenue Building.

“Superintendent Brain Jett has been great to work with” stated Chief Davis.

The Fort Payne Police Department remodel project will take over a year to complete.

The Fort Payne City Jail and the Dispatch Center are unaffected and will remain at the present location of 200 Gault Avenue South.
