DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — Voters across DeKalb County and the whole state of Alabama will head to the polls next Tuesday, June 5, to vote in several statewide and local races.
For the first time in a long time, several races across the DeKalb County area are wide open with no clear winner in sight. As candidates race to the finish line, here's a brief breakdown of the local races you will see on the Republican primary ballot next week. Be aware that this is a common ballot, however, some officers will be voted on only in specific districts at certain precincts.
- DeKalb County Sheriff: Michael Edmondson and Nick Welden
- DeKalb County Circuit Clerk: Todd Greeson and Melissa Ledbetter
- 9th Judicial Circuit - Circuit Judge, Place 2: Andrew Hairston, Scott Lloyd, and Jeff McCurdy
- DeKalb County Commission (Place 3): Tony "Buck" Keef and Chris Kuykendall
- DeKalb County Board of Education (District 3): Arlan "Monk" Blevins, Carol Hiett, and Jeff Williams
- DeKalb County Board of Education (District 4): Monty Darwin, Hazel Haynes, and Matt G. Sharp
- Alabama State Senator (District 8): Max D. Fuller and Steve Livingston
- Alabama State Senator (District 10): Mack N. Butler and Andrew Jones
- Alabama State Representative (District 23): Parker Edmiston and Tommy Hanes
- Alabama State Representative (District 27): Wes Kitchens and Ronnie E. Opolka
- Alabama State Representative (District 39): TJ Maloney and Ginny Shaver
In addition to these local officers, voters will find other races including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, U.S. Representative, Attorney General, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Court of Civil Appeals Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals Judge, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, State Auditor, Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, Public Service Commission, State Board of Education, State Republican Executive Committee, and DeKalb County Republican Executive Committee.
There will also be five amendments regarding already existing taxes that benefit our local schools.
According to DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett:
“For decades, the people of DeKalb County have been committed to supporting and have shown a strong support of our local schools, and I ask that you show your continued support by renewing and continuing this existing allocation for public schools. I want to impress upon you that this is not a new tax or fund source, but a continuation of funding which supports the following programs and services: School security, student vocational programs, instructional support, student transportation, school secretaries, custodians, maintenance, child nutrition (lunchroom), school utilities (electricity, natural and propane gas, water, telephone, etc..), special needs programs, district gifted teachers, and various other employee salaries and operational requirements/needs.”
