FYFFE, Ala. — The Fyffe Red Devils defeated the Walter Wellborn Panthers, 42-13 in the second round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) State Football Playoffs.
Ike Rowell scored one of his four rushing touchdowns of the night with 8:03 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was unsuccessful. Rowell attacked again, this time from 72-yards out with 3:58 remaining in the first. Rowell successfully brought in the two-point conversion to give the Red Devils the 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
With 6:38 remaining in the first half, Rowell made the 16-yard connection to Brody Dalton for the score. The Panthers scored with 1:15 remaining in the first half on a 3-yard scamper. Fyffe answered back with 35.6 remaining in the opening half when Rowell connected with Hunter Gillian on a 33-yard pass connection, to take the 28-7 lead into the half.
The Panthers fumbled the opening kickoff which Fyffe recovered. The Red Devils capitalized on the fumble with Rowell scoring a touchdown with 10:12 remaining in the third.
With 10:17 remaining in the fourth, Rowell crashed in from 4-yards out, giving the Red Devils the 42-7 advantage. With 2:27 remaining in the game, Wellborn scored. Will Stephens blocked the extra point to make the final score of the game, 42-13.
Rowell led the Red Devils with 162 on 18 carries for the night.
“I thought our kids really played good physical football last week and blocked extremely well,” stated Fyffe Head Coach Paul Benefield. “I’m really proud of them for competing at such a high level but it doesn’t get any easier this week, with having to travel to Ohatchee.”
Fyffe (12-0) will travel to take on the Ohatchee Indians (11-1) on Friday night for the third round of the AHSAA State Football Playoffs.
