POWER Rankings

With half the season in the books the true identities of teams are starting to take shape. It's difficult to hide with a 5 game sample size.

Southern Torch has compiled our Mid Season POWER Rankings based on a number of factors.

  • Overall Record
  • Region Record
  • Head to Head Match-ups
  • Strength of Schedule
  • Margin of Victory
  • Fan Base

1.  Fyffe Red Devils (4-1, 3-0)

Since losing to the Geraldine Bulldogs in Week 1, the Red Devils have stomped on the throat of their last 4 opponents averaging a 34 point margin of victory over that span.

  • Impact Win: Fyffe 34- Walter Wellborn 6
  • Impact Loss: Geraldine 20 - Fyffe 14
  • Average Margin of Victory: +26
  • Next: at Sand Rock

2. Valley Head Tigers (5-0, 5-0)

The heavily under-publicized Tigers have steam rolled through the first half of the season. After consecutive 3 win seasons, Coach Rusty Higdon's Tigers are back on top and looking for a deep postseason run.

  • Impact Win: Valley Head 20 - Donoho 14
  • Impact Loss: No Losses
  • Average Margin of Victory: +24
  • Next: vs Coosa Christian

3. Geraldine Bulldogs (3-2, 2-1)

A Week 3 POWER Rankings would've had the Bulldogs in the top spot, but after stumbling the last two games the Bulldogs find themselves trying to regain their form.

  • Impact Win: Geraldine 20 - Fyffe 14
  • Impact Loss: New Hope 21 - Geraldine 13
  • Average Margin of Victory: +9
  • Next: vs Sylvania (GOTW)

4.  Collinsville Panthers (4-1, 4-1)

Through the first four weeks the Panthers would've found themselves in a battle for #1, but after falling on a last second field goal to Donoho on Friday night the Panthers settle in at #4.

  • Impact Win: Collinsville 33 - Sumiton Christian 32 ()T)
  • Impact Loss: Collinsville 27 - Donoho 30
  • Average Margin of Victory:  +18
  • Next: vs Cedar Bluff

5.  Plainview Bears (3-2, 2-1)

The Bears continued their Jekyll and Hyde ways on Friday night with a 27-21 loss at home to Sand Rock. Middle of the pack is a fitting spot for the inconsistent Bears right now.

  • Impact Win: Plainview 34 - Pisgah 25
  • Impact Loss: Sand Rock 27 - Plainview 21
  • Average Margin of Victory: +7
  • Next: at Brindlee Mountain

6.  Fort Payne Wildcats (2-3, 2-2)

The Wildcats have struggled to put it together this season after losing almost 30 seniors from last season's impressive class. The young Cats' should improve and move up in the second half of the season.

  • Impact Win: Fort Payne 20 - Arab 15
  • Impact Loss: Etowah 21 - Fort Payne 10
  • Average Margin of Victory: +1
  • Next: vs Boaz

7.  Sylvania Rams (1-4, 0-3)

The Rams have struggled in the first half of the season under new Head Coach Roger Haynes. Much of that may be blamed on a very complex system that Coach Haynes is implementing in the Rams entire football program at all ages. Time will tell if it's effective.

  • Impact Win: Sylvania 33 - Holly Pond 6
  • Impact Loss: JB Pennington 31 - Sylvania 30
  • Average Margin of Victory: -8
  • Next: at Geraldine (GOTW)

8.  Ider Hornets (1-4, 1-2)

The Hornets have been extremely lackluster so far this season after hoping to land another playoff birth. Key losses to the offensive line via graduation and a new offensive scheme may be what's holding them back.

  • Impact Win: Ider 27 - West End 18
  • Impact Loss: Ider 16 - Westbrook Christian 21
  • Average Margin of Victory: -13
  • Next: at Section

9.  Crossville Lions (1-4, 0-3)

The Lions just gave new Head Coach Brian Clowdis his first win at Crossville. With the school coming off of a 1-9 season and only 3 playoff births in the last decade, the Lion faithful would be wise to give Clowdis time to rebuild the program.

  • Impact Win: DAR 14 - Crossville 31
  • Impact Loss: Crossville 7 - Sardis 49
  • Average Margin of Victory: -14
  • Next: vs Locust Fork
