Share the Joy

DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — During the Christmas season, several “heroes” joined forces to help those who are less fortunate. Southern Torch would like to recognize a few of those in our community who go above and beyond to give back.

Jimmy Rogers, owner of Mentone’s Green Leaf Grill, hosted his third annual Christmas potluck dinner at his restaurant on Christmas Day. The community came together with covered dishes and fellowship to celebrate a season of giving. Rogers welcomed all, even if you couldn’t bring a dish or drive yourself there.

Mycah Swift of Ider had a vision of helping other children have joy at this time of year as well. Swift took this idea for “Shop with a Cop” to Chief Kevin Smith of the Rainsville Police Department and made it not just a reality, but a tradition. On Saturday, December 22, the second annual Shop with a Cop helped 59 children see Christmas presents this year.

Fort Payne also had a very successful Shop with a Cop on Sunday, December 23. Generous donations from the community along with the No Shave program allowed the department to help 22 children with their Christmas.

Both departments would like to thank everyone who helped out and gave a special thanks to Fort Payne Walmart.

At this time of year, it is important for us to stow away all of the bad headlines from across the globe and come together. We are all glad that these people would take the time to make a difference. We hope you’ve had a Merry Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year!
