Richards will not seek re-election to BOE

By Marla Jones, Managing Editor •

DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. — On Tuesday, DeKalb County Board of Education member Mark Richards announced that he would not seek a fourth term in 2020. Richards’ district covers both Geraldine and Fyffe schools.

“Serving as the representative for District Two over the last eighteen years has been more rewarding than I could have ever imagined,” stated Richards. “I cannot put into words how humbled I have been for the support, faith and encouragement [that] I’ve received from everyone.”

“While serving, I have had the opportunity to work with exceptionally devoted teachers, support workers, administrators and board members.  I am inspired daily by their continued hard work and passion for our school system.  Witnessing the success our students have achieved and being a part of the system’s growth has been the most rewarding part of it all,” he continued. “To my fellow Board, community, friends, family and everyone who has been a part of my journey, I want to thank you for making the last 18 years a time that I will forever cherish and be grateful for.  It has truly been an honor to serve you all.”

Richards greatly expressed his appreciation to his fellow Board members as well as DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett.

“As I have gotten older, I have developed a greater appreciation for time and just how quickly it passes by,” Richards concluded. “Family and friends are precious to me. I am looking forward to spending more time with them.”

The District Two seat for the DeKalb County Board of Education will be up in 2020. The Alabama presidential and statewide primary will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2020.
