Rainsville PD searching for forgers

By Staff Reports

RAINSVILLE, Ala. — At approximately 11:08am on March 11, the Rainsville Police Department received a call from First Southern State Bank in Rainsville.

The bank reported a customer that had presented a forged and stolen check in the amount of $3,900. Sgt. Nick Knopps was the first officer on scene and he detained Marty C. Mathews of Chattanooga. Chief Kevin R. Smith and Detective Todd Bowen arrived on the scene and the investigation continued.

The investigation revealed that Mathews had been cashing these stolen checks in Fort Payne, Cherokee County in Alabama, and Kimball, Tenn. with approximately $27,000 having been written at this time.

Mathews had two accomplices that fled the scene and traveled eastbound on Alabama Highway 35 in a blue Ford Focus with an unknown Texas tag. Mathews was arrested and transported to the Rainsville City Detention Center for processing and booking.

Det. Bowen obtained warrants for four counts of Forgery in the 3rd degree for Mathews, who was then transported to the DeKalb County Detention Center. His bond has been set at $30,000.

“We need the public’s help in identifying these unknown men,” said Rainsville Police Chief Kevin Smith. “If anyone can identify who these men are, please contact the Rainsville Police Department.”

The Rainsville Police Department can be reached via phone at (256) 638-2157 or by email at rainsvillepd@farmerstel.com. The photos of the men can be seen below.
