Omar Fires Back at ALGOP

By Zach Hester, Reporter •

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last month, a resolution was approved by the Alabama Republican Party that called for the expulsion of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) for what the sponsor, State Rep. Tommy Hanes (R-Bryant), refers to as “anti-American” sentiments.

“I believe [Omar] has broken her oath of office with her anti-American statements. I’m calling upon the Alabama delegation in Washington to start proceedings to expel her from her seat in the House of Representatives,” said Hanes, who has represented Alabama’s 23rd state house district since 2015.

Last week, Omar fired back at the Alabama Republican Party and U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore on Twitter, stating:

“Sorry, @ALGOPHQ, but this is a representative democracy. I was elected with 78% of the vote by the people of Minnesota’s 5th District, not the Alabama Republican Party. If you want to clean up politics, maybe don’t nominated an accused child molester as your Senate candidate?”

Omar, one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress, has repeatedly come under fire since taking office for controversial statements regarding the relationship between the United States and Israel. Last month, President Donald Trump lashed out at Omar and other Democratic congresswomen, telling them to “go back” to where they came from.

“President Trump was right: she should go back to Somalia from whence she came,” said Judge Roy Moore, U.S. Senate candidate and former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.

Scott Simpson, the Public Advocacy Director for Muslim Advocates, an organization dedicated to bolstering the American Muslim community, responded in a statement saying, “These are not just attacks on Rep. Omar, these are attacks on an entire community.”

“Having a state political party officially adopt such a hateful, dishonest resolution is a troubling escalation of the ongoing effort to vilify American Muslims,” Simpson concluded.
