Students Show Appreciation to Fort Payne

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — (Full Video on our Facebook) The Fort Payne City Council held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

Councilmember Lynn Brewer presented the Council with handmade thank you cards from Fort Payne City School students who received school supplies from the Council. Earlier this year, the Council presented two checks to the Fort Payne Board of Education to purchase school supplies for every student in the school system. The amount of this year’s donation was a total of $200,000.

In other business, the Council adopted the following resolutions:

  • 2019-33, authorizing the City Attorney Rocky Watson to file validation proceedings with the DeKalb County Circuit Court for the Development Agreement with Valley Joist, LLC.
  • 2019-34, naming signatories for the City’s bank accounts.
  • Resolution 2019-35, naming the City’s annual paving list, as their municipal plan, for the ReBuild Alabama Act. 

The City approved an activity permit for the Fort Payne High School Homecoming Parade beginning at 3rd Street South and running to 8th Street North on Thursday, September 12 from 5pm to 7pm. 

An alcohol license for F.C. Weiss on 213 Gault Avenue North was forwarded to the Council from the Alcohol Committee. This license was approved by the Council.

Bids for the construction of the interior portion of the public works building were opened August 12, 2019. Only one bid was received from SAM Construction in the amount of $559,000 and the price was open for negotiation. Public Works Director Tim Williams discussed the scope of the bid and negotiated the price to $473,072 with materials being bought through the City’s tax exempt status. 

The next meeting of the Fort Payne City Council will be held at 12pm on Tuesday, September 3 on the second floor of Fort Payne City Hall.
