18-Wheeler Wrecks on Interstate

By Staff Reports

DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Transportation advises motorists that the DeKalb County 140 bridge over Interstate 59 at Sulphur Springs (Exit 239), about 1.5 miles from the Georgia state line, was closed to the public after being damaged in a tractor-trailer crash this morning (Wednesday, May 29).

ALDOT is working to design repairs and aims to promptly let an emergency contract for those repairs. ALDOT is committed to reopening the bridge and any affected interstate lanes as soon as possible once the integrity of the structure and safety of the traveling public have been ensured.

I-59 southbound is currently closed between the Exit 239 ramps and may remain closed for an extended period. All southbound traffic is diverted onto the exit ramps and back to I-59 southbound. Motorists should expect some delays. Northbound I-59 remains open. DeKalb County 140 is closed at the overpass and will remain closed for an extended period. Currently, eastbound traffic can access I-59 southbound only, and westbound traffic can access I-59 northbound only.
