DEKALB, Ala. — After years of award-winning performances and bringing pride to their campuses, the students of the Geraldine and Sylvania bands were surprised with an announcement at their game last Friday night; a surprise that has been kept a secret since June.

As the two bands finished honoring America with a joint rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the announcement that on October 7, 2018, the combined Geraldine and Sylvania bands would be performing a medley of patriotic songs in the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. was met with cheers, tears of joy, and thunderous applause.

“We are so excited to finally let the kids know about this trip. They deserve it,” said Sylvania Band Director Patrick Roszell.

“They have worked so hard, and it’s great to finally see them receive some recognition,” said Sylvania Band Booster President Donna Womack.

The bands will be leaving in the early hours on October 6, 2018, and returning on October 10.  In addition to their performance on one of the nation’s most prominent stages, the students will receive many important lessons in our nation’s history.  They will tour the Smithsonian Museums, the National Archives, Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Holocaust Museum, all of the monuments on the National Mall, and other locations on this once-in-a-lifetime trip.

“It’s been my dream to see the statue of Abraham Lincoln, and it’s finally coming true,” said Geraldine band student Levi Mashburn.

As can be expected, this trip for these very deserving students will be an expensive undertaking.  Geraldine and Sylvania Band students will be selling vinyl yard signs for $20 to help offset the costs of the trip.

There is also a page on gofundme.com called “Geraldine & Sylvania Bands DC Trip” where donors can make tax-deductible donations of any amount to these programs.  There will also be other fundraisers throughout the next year that will help these bands and students.

“These kids deserve so much, and we are hoping the communities that these kids perform for every Friday night in the fall and at concerts in the spring will reciprocate and help provide financial support for these bands to make it to the performance that they will remember for the rest of their lives. We are thankful for any amount that can be donated,” stated Geraldine Band Director Lauren Roszell.
