SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — On Friday, Alabama Senator Steve Livingston (R - Scottsboro) urged voters to contact the candidates for the U.S. Senate seat regarding the future development of the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant.

The government utility company, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) started construction on the project in 1974 and suspended work in 1988. In 2016, the project was abandoned and it was decided that the unfinished plant was to sold at auction.

Nuclear Development LLC then agreed to buy Bellefonte within two years of the November 2016 sales agreement for $111 million. The company is seeking to finish the plant and sell it's power to TVA. Finishing the plant alone would bring 4500 construction jobs to the area.

Senator Livingston's Statement from September 22, 2017: Tuesday’s election may have an impact on our local economy.  The candidate that we choose to serve in the U.S. Senate seat can help our counties and communities by supporting the Bellefonte Project- a project which could bring thousands of new jobs to our region.

I urge and encourage everyone to get out and vote on Tuesday, and write your candidate a letter asking him to help our economy and our future in Northeast Alabama by supporting the Bellefonte Project.
