The Saga Continues

DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — After provisional ballots were counted this afternoon, the race for DeKalb County School Board – District 3 got even more odd than last week’s standstill between incumbent Jeff Williams, Arlan “Monk” Blevins, and Carol Hiett.

Last week, Hiett led the field of three with 846 votes, while Blevins and Williams landed behind with 748-747 votes, respectively. With just one vote separating the pair to see who would face Hiett in a runoff, provisional ballots would have to be counted.

Today, provisional ballots were counted and it was discovered that Jeff Williams received two votes from provisional ballots while Arlan “Monk” Blevins received one vote, thus making them equally tied at 749 votes per person, while Hiett still had 846 votes.

Provisional ballots are ballots that are cast when there are questions about a voter’s eligibility. The reasons for voting a provisional ballot can be any of the following:

  • The voter refuses to show identification
  • The voter’s name doesn’t appear on the roll for a given precinct
  • The voter’s registration contains outdated information

Whether or not a provisional ballot is counted is determined at a later date when the voter’s eligibility can be properly verified.

With provisional ballots, each candidate has 24 hours after the votes are counted to contest.

The DeKalb County Republican Party will decide what to do about this series of unfolding events tonight at their meeting. Southern Torch will keep you updated as news comes in.
