UPDATE: DeKalb County Sheriff's Office warns of another phone scam

By Staff Reports

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office: On today’s date the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has learned of a new scam that is going around. In this scam they will call a person from a phone number 876-409-3676 from Kingston, Surrey County Jamaica or it will come up as No Caller ID. These people will portray themselves as Publishers Clearing House stating that you have won a 2017 S-Class S250 Coupe Mercedes Benz and $3.5 million.

They will tell you that you need to send them a money gram for $5000.00 to start with and then they will call back a few days later and tell you that they need you to send $15,000.00 to finish up with the transfer of the money. They are very persistent on you sending the money to a Jamaica address.

DeKalb County Chief Deputy Edmondson said, “These are the most common kinds of scams out there, so please be aware of these types of calls. We cannot stress this enough, remember that you do not need to give any personal information to anyone over the phone or send money to someone that you do not know.”

Last Thursday, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office notified the public of another scam. The scam is an individual pretending to be an Investigator or a Deputy with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office; telling people that he has warrants on them for failure to report for a grand jury and that the fine can be paid over the phone. The two names being used are James Marshall with the phone number 256-801-0885, and the name Jack Phillips with the number 720-534-5137.

If you receive a call from one of these numbers or someone using these names please know that this is a scam. Please remember that you do not need to give any personal information to anyone over the phone and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office will never call you demanding money or telling you to pay a fine. If you have any doubt about the identity of anyone representing themselves as employees of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office hang up immediately and dial 256-845-3801 to confirm their identity.
