Free Seminar on Human Trafficking at NACC

The Northeast Alabama Community College Emergency Medical Services Program is presenting a free important and informative educational seminar on Thursday, February 26 in the Health Education Building on campus. The topic to be presented will be Human Trafficking (not to be confused with human smuggling). There are two sessions, one at 3 pm and again at 5 pm.

The seminar presenter will be K. Tajuan McCarty, who founded The WellHouse, Inc. in 2010. WellHouse helps to raise awareness about human trafficking, assists in how to identify/relate to victims and provides necessary services. McCarty was Executive Director from 2010 to 2014. She is responsible for speaking on behalf of WellHouse at churches, schools and other social events, training social service providers, law enforcement and other agencies, as requested. She is also the contact person for media. She assists in development aspects with local foundations, including grant writing as needed. “I continue to cast the vision God gave me for WellHouse with our current Executive Director and Board of Directors,” said McCarty.

McCarty has a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, a Master of Public Health, and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She has made numerous presentations and has served as a consultant for many years. She received the 2014 Ruby Award, Soroptimist International, US Southern District and Huntsville District. She received the 2013 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award, and was listed in the 2013 Birmingham’s 20 Women Who Make a Difference by the Birmingham News.

The seminar target audience is EMS and medical professionals; however, anyone in the community is welcome to attend. “We want to raise awareness, help you to recognize the signs and know what resources are available should you encounter a potential victim,” said Shelia Barnes, EMS Program Director at NACC. “Everyone should learn the facts and help dispel the myths associated with this growing problem in our area.”

ABN CE credit will be awarded to those who present their nursing license. CECBEMS credit will be awarded to EMS professionals. To register, please email your name, contact information and licensure information to Donna Moore at NACC at moored@nacc.edu.

There is no charge for this seminar; however, donations from participants and their organizations can be made to the WellHouse.
