FORT PAYNE, Ala. — As the first day of school approaches, many parents face the financial burden of purchasing school supplies for their children.

At the June 5 meeting of the Fort Payne City Council, Fort Payne City Schools Superintendent Jim Cunningham was presented with two checks for the supplies by the City Council.

To lighten the load for parents in the Fort Payne School District, the Fort Payne City Council allotted $150,000 to pay for all the necessary supplies. The second check was the city’s regular donation of $50,00 per year.

Cunningham thanked the Council on behalf of the approximately 3,200 students who will benefit from these donations. The allotment will allow the school system to spend around $50 per student.

“I think it is important to sow into the lives of our children, because the children are our future,” stated Fort Payne City Council President Brian Baine. “Giving this money to purchase school supplies not only helps the students, but it also helps the classroom and ultimately it helps the families of these children with the expense of back to school essentials.”

The first day of school for Fort Payne City, Cornerstone Christian Academy and DeKalb County students will be on Wednesday, August 7, 2019.
