Valley Head Cemetery to hold benefit 5k

VALLEY HEAD, Ala. — On Saturday, September 24, Valley Head will play host to the Valley Head Cemetery 5K and Fun Run, as a way to raise money for maintenance of the Valley Head Cemetery.

The race will be held at Valley Head Cemetery, located at the corner of Highway 117 and Carmichael Road.

“This is the first year for this, but we hope to continue it, that’s the plan right now,” said Sherryl Lewis, one of the key figures for the event. “Everyone I’ve talked to hopes that this becomes a recurring event,” she added.

In addition to the overall maintenance of the cemetery, Lewis said that the money raised will also help with repairs to the pavilion and other needs that might arise.

According to Lewis, the idea for the event came about in quite an interesting way. “People go there to walk around and get some exercise in. Also, I run 5Ks, so I thought it was a pretty good idea for a fundraiser,” she explained.

As a way to bring in further money, the race organizers sold sponsorship space on the back of the fundraiser T-shirts. Some members of the community also purchased memorials to be printed on the shirts. “Everyone with a shirt will have the memorials on the back, as well as the sponsoring businesses’ ads,” Lewis said.

When asked, Lewis detailed that the 5K would begin in the cemetery, but that the course would take runners out onto Carmichael Road before returning to the cemetery and the finish line.

Following the 5K, there will also be a Fun Run of just under one mile, designed primarily for children, though she did explain that there would be some adults taking part in it as well.

On race day, registration will begin at 7 AM. The 5K starts at 8, with the Fun Run immediately following. Registration for the 5K is $25, while the cost for participating in the Fun Run will be $20.

For those who want to support this cause, but are unable to take part in either race, fundraiser T-shirts will be available for $15.
